Job Summary

Build and evolve Whatnot’s Data Platform for next-generation capabilities, leading technical direction and development of critical systems. Drive the Flink platform from early investment to production-ready stream processing usage company-wide. Design scalable, reliable, multi-tenant streaming infrastructure and own core reliability concerns (SLOs, performance, operational excellence). Enable real-time analytics, event-driven applications, and machine learning infrastructure by making key architecture decisions and partnering cross-functionally.

Key Responsibilities

•Define technical direction and lead development of critical data platform systems powering next-generation capabilities.
•Lead the buildout and evolution of the Flink platform to enable production-ready stream processing across the company.
•Design scalable, reliable, multi-tenant streaming infrastructure for real-time analytics and event-driven applications.
•Own platform concerns including scalability, performance, reliability, SLOs, and operational excellence for stream processing systems.
•Make integration architecture decisions across Whatnot and partner cross-functionally with product, platform, machine learning, and data teams.

Key Requirements

•5+ years of experience building production-scale software and API-driven services that are well tested.
•Strong background building scalable, high-performance distributed systems.
•Hands-on experience with streaming systems (Kafka, Flink, or Pulsar) and building/evolving the platform layer, not just downstream pipelines.
•Experience designing stateful real-time data pipelines at scale (checkpointing, state management, watermarking) and evaluating architectural tradeoffs.
•Experience with cloud data stores (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift) and operational support (monitoring, alerting, incident management).
