Job Summary

Design and optimize tunnel ventilation and fire life safety systems for transit, rail, and highway projects. Develop design criteria, calculations, drawings, and technical reports, and use simulation tools (1-D SES and 3-D CFD) to predict performance and meet tenability and safety requirements. Support commissioning and construction administration, collaborate with risk and quality leaders, publish technical articles, and help grow the tunnel ventilation practice.

Key Responsibilities

•Consult on design, optimization, and construction administration of tunnel ventilation and fire life safety systems for transit, rail, and highway projects.
•Develop design criteria, manuals, technical reports, designs, calculations, drawings, and specifications, including heating/cooling load and pressure loss calculations.
•Create ventilation concepts and strategies and perform performance prediction/optimization using 1-D SES and 3-D CFD to satisfy tenability and fire life safety requirements.
•Provide support during commissioning and construction administration.
•Assist with growing the tunnel vent practice, including pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and mentoring more junior tunnel ventilation engineers.

Travel: Low travel

Key Requirements

•BA/BS plus 8 years of relevant experience (or equivalent).
•Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
•Professional registration (PE) in at least one state; ability to register in other states as needed.
•Experience with tunnel ventilation and fire life safety regulatory requirements (including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502) for road, railway, and underground spaces.
•Experience with systems engineering, integration, equipment testing/implementation, and tunnel ventilation/underground structures; advanced simulation and design-criteria development experience.
